CWS is there!

From Greek Orthodox to Catholic to the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch, Church World Service partners with churches and organizations around the world to respond to disasters. Today the catastrophe in Haiti is no different. CWS has been working with the European agency Christian Aid for years. Christian Aid maintains offices in Port-Au-Prince, making them some of the first responders today even though their offices and employees were affected as well.

CWS responds with volunteers and practical help. When disaster hits, CWS goes into immediate emergency action. Today CWS is already shipping and handing out some of the famous CWS disaster relief kits, guaranteed to make life a little easier for everyone affected. The monetary donations received will go to the clean up and rebuilding of schools, orphanages, homes and lives… See Church World Service : Kits Program for more information. CWS stores these kits for just this type of disaster and therefore is able to quickly respond to immediate needs in a practical way. The kits are donated by churches and individuals all over the world all year long and are welcome at anytime but right now is the time to act.

Who is CWS? Church World Service provides sustainable self-help and development, disaster relief and refugee assistance in over 80 countries around the world. Their mission statement reads: “Church World Service works with partners to eradicate hunger and poverty and promote peace and justice among the world's most vulnerable people.” You can click here to check out the list of Church World Service member denominations and communions.

How do they spend their income?

CWS financials published for the 2008/2009 year report that:

· 19.2% of their income was spent on Disaster Relief (which doesn’t include the direct donations of kits)

· 41.5% was spent on Refugee Resettlement and Assistance

· 6.3% was spent on Hunger & Development

· 9.9% was spent on Social & Economic Development

· 13% was spent on Information…

· Only 1.6% was spent on Mission Relationships

· And the final 4.7% was on Administration, not a bad number considering they work globally in 80 countries!

Thanks PD! I work with these folks all year round and find them all to be compassionate and concerned besides incredibly knowledgeable about world affairs.

Thanks for all the information - there is nothing like a personal recommendation. I was just wondering exactly where - usually I write a check but a credit card is so much easier and quicker - I'll know it got there instantly!

Thanks again!

Glad I could help BK! Because of their practical work in so many places, I never question my donations to them. (And frankly it's fun to collect items for the kits - but that's what I get for being a shop-a-holic!)

Great writing. Your hubs are effortlessly persuasive. I was getting worried about the amount of people saying " charity begins at Home". You and like-minded people can restore broken lives. We all can say we live in difficult times Haiti people will love you for this.

Well done.

Thanks Jim, Habee and Sean for dropping by. It's a great organization to work with and the fact that they stay in "crisis mode" all the time, ready to help at a drop of a hat is amazing.
