Religious Charity and Judging Others
An author recently used the following quote from the Christian bible to explain that "giving and doing good towards others are like adding capital to your heavenly account...the good you do comes back to you!”.
“The bible says, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:20-21)
I submit that there can be a different definition or meaning for this particular passage or instruction. I submit that this is direct communication to us to keep our sights on our own hearts and allow our personal God to use what we give - unconditionally. That it is a communication to “follow our hearts”, to do for others based on what we believe in our hearts to be our personal God’s will. I submit that this is a direct instruction to not judge others and to not judge the actions of others.
Gaining Knowledge and Instructions
Although many have tried to scientifically and mathematically determine the sociological (or “ripple”) effect of one thing or another in our world, it can never be completely evaluated because all we have is our own comprehension in our own time. The most knowledgeable people on earth can take into consideration the here and now, can consider the historical facts and to some extent can evaluate the future effects but what no one can do is predict the future or all of the “ripples” with complete accuracy – there are just too many variables and there is just too much information for mere humans to conceive or log into any equation.
I submit that the only way to truly know where to give of ourselves is through a personal, internal relationship. Your God - be it monotheist or not - may be called “God” or “Yahweh” or “Allah” or “Being” or “Holy One” or "All-Glorious"or “Bhagavan” or any number of hundreds of names but knowledge of your deity’s will can only be gained through a personal relationship. Given that this is not able to be accomplished through a face to face, sit down conversation, it must be obtained through intentional, internal soul searching. In my world of Christianity, this would be “prayer”.
This passage, from the “Sermon on the Mount” as related through the Christian bible, specifically admonishes us to “do” based on our personal council, our own personal belief and to do it with a heart that is in tandem with God’s. I submit that with the knowledge and love of our own God in our hearts, there will be “good” in the future outcomes of all giving – no matter what we believe we see happening in the here and now.
The seventh chapter following the sixth cited above is devoted to the concept of judging others. The first four verses specifically give us clarity on this point;
1)Do not judge so that you will not be judged.
2"For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.
3"Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
4Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and behold, the log is in your own eye?
These are pivotal instructions. Our earthly world is based on judgments. From individual interaction to corporate interaction to global interaction, judgments are our “stock in trade” today, so the problems of personal judgments range from simplistic to extremely complex. You’ve heard it restated often in the Native American quote "walk a mile in another man's moccasins." This is knowledge that we, as mere humans, don’t have. We don’t know all that is happening with the other person, we don’t know who or what else is affected by actions or decisions of another. I submit that through the relating of this story, God is asking that we allow God to fulfill the promise of our individual faith. That God is asking us to spend our efforts in service to others rather than in taking over the job of “judging others” which is God’s alone.
Why Give? What's the point?
Giving to charity or contributing our efforts in community service is tough in today’s times. We, as humans have become jaded. I submit that this is not - as many feel - because the world has become more greedy. History is full of apparently greedy, mean, hateful characters that take advantage of others but because we now live in a global world that produces much more information that is available to everyone, it is just more obvious and more likely to skew our personal outlooks. I submit that basic human nature hasn’t changed in thousands of years – that basic human nature is good and giving. Our gifts of charity or service to others is one of the basic purposes of life. Responding to other humans in need is inherent in our beings, I submit that negative behavior is learned from our encounters here on earth but that even these behaviors can serve a purpose, allowing us to give and to reach out to each other – connecting our souls.
Outpouring of charity and humanitarian efforts during times of disaster taps into our souls, touching a part of us that can tend to elude us on a day to day basis. Realizing that we are not alone in our journey here on earth, bringing us outside of ourselves and becoming more accepting of other’s beliefs in an all powerful deity that may “look” different than our own is at least a bit of good that is created through a very bad situation.
Our “job” then is to continue participating in humanitarian efforts or acts of charity, expanding our worlds to include all of mankind, expanding our beliefs to realize that our God is so powerful as to understand every single individual’s personal soul and respond with love. Giving of charitable dollars or of service then becomes - not an act to be dissected and judged - but an act of inner love.

Rope, Giving is so important and I'm glad you wrote this hub. I think we need to be careful where we give but you always receive more than you give in so many ways. Good hub,
All religions ask you to be charitable to the needy. I suppose its part of the do all the good you can to as many as you can diktat. If you think about it, it is a natural feeling to share your good fortune with others you care about. It is ingrained in basic human nature.
Good Hub. Well thought-out & presented.
In my understanding, as freely as we have received in terms of time, talent & treasures, we are to freely give. Our common humanity demands that we give & care for those who have fallen on hard times.
Peace & blessings to you.
Giving is part of who we become, when we are blessed, we are called to bless others. It is a natural progression I believe in our basic instinct to reach out.
I think you touched on a very personal point and one which many need to understand. Giving starts in the heart, a heart that fails in giving is a heart that is hardened.
Looking forward to reading on, a blessing has been found in what you write.
I have yet to see a hersh puling a U Haul.
Blessings
I used to belong to a church that preached when you gave money to expect 10-fold and even 100-fold in return. I like your teaching much better because it talks about giving from the heart and when we do that we shouldn't EXPECT anything in return. It is good to be a "cheerful giver."
I believe we are on earth to serve. This is our purpose. And not to serve oneself. I enjoyed your fine work here. This is an excellent and needful message. Thank you for publishing this work.
Great hub. Enjoyed reading it.
You should follow me and read some of my hubs.
Great hub sir. I like the message. I "harp" on two basics and will continue until I change my permanent address on Planet Earth. 20 plus religions have a form of the Golden Rule. For Christians this rule is above all others. There is no law above this. More importantly than identifying Jesus Himself apparently. As He said I give you this Commandment to be above all others that you love one another- you love your neighbor as yourself. It's the LAW. He said so. It must be so.
Next He said-"Pray like this: our father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven..." We are to pray that our earth will resemble what we think heaven is to be. My heaven is not littering. It is not chasing an animal down and cutting its throat. My heaven is not having war. To accept that there will be wars and rumors of wars over the Lord's Prayer is a defeated attitude. I find war unacceptable and a lot of energy should be spent preventing wars and the other negative natures that people accept every day. We must evolve- to a higher calling. Of course now we can all revert back to our individualistic interpretation. My sermon is over-until I repeat the same tired message again. Thanks for a great hub.
Nicely said.
I believe we are to give for one simple reason. We are to follow the example given to us by God.
Each day as the sun rises it powers the plants to grow and so we have food to eat.
And as the sun moves in it's daily course across the sky it heats the oceans, the seas, the lakes, and the rivers. And the waters of the earth are raised up into the sky forming clouds and bringing rain. Which is the moisture for all living things to enjoy and live on.
The sun does not chose which man or woman or city or town to bring light and heat to. As it rises it blesses the good and the evil, the weak and the strong, the common thief and the pillar of the community.
And this is the example given to us. The sun. It does not boast or brag. It does not compel us to enjoy the gifts freely given.
And so it is with God. He is not shut up in some far away heaven. But He lives, watching over His creation. Pouring out a blessing that daily overflows the windows of our souls with light...if we know who it is that made the sun. And if we know Him then we know what He is like. We have this living example before us day by day. The sun. Pouring out his gifts for free.
Why is God this way?
Why does a grandmother pay out her last dollar for her visiting grandchild's ice cream cone?
Why does a husband ignore the bad humor of his now crippled wife?
Why does God send His Son to walk among us as a common carpenter instead of as a King?
Perhaps Love has a way of doing that is according to a Plan. A plan that makes room for someone else's need first. A Loving Way that requires sacrifice and patience.
Giving is like that. Jesus Christ is like that.
I want to be like that more often, more loving, more for-giving...more like God's Son. Our example to follow.
The next time you see the sun rise, I hope you'll think of the sun which God created...as an example of the Son He gave to us.
I think we all should give as our hearts and mind's allow, because God loves and His gifts are the evidence of His love. If we love God then we will be imitators of that love. May God's love be visible to you and yours. If it is..tell a friend, enjoy the day, praise His name.
I loved your hub. It's great to read a second time. God bless!
